On Shipping Pets or Pet Moving

Posted on Friday, June 26th

Shipping pets is a delicate process because there are a lot of details to consider at all times from proper shipping related aspects to preparing them and finding ways for them to feel comfortable throughout their travel and in their new home. It should be noted that it is very important for their safety to be healthy and happy at all times.

Making preparations for pet moving

We all make preparations before we travel somewhere, so it should come as no surprise that pets need to be prepared for travelling as well. In their case, the entire process begins with a visit to the vet, where they get vaccinated and you get copies of their health records from. The next step is to look into the laws and regulations on pets applicable to the city or state you are moving to. This includes checking your pet's identification tags and the transfer paperwork. Last but not least, you need to make the actual shipping preparations, more specifically to decide on a shipping method, compare offers, buy the supplies you need and get your pet accustomed to travelling.

The actual pet moving process

The mode of transportation you choose will depend on a number of factors such as the distance over which the pet is to be shipped. Thus, short trips can be taken by car, in which case you need to find a kennel of an appropriate size for the pet to be safe at all times during transportation. Once you have arrived at the new location, you can either keep the pet with you while you move or you can have someone else take care of it for a few days, just until you have managed to put everything in place. In fact, the latter solution is highly recommended for the pet is thus protected against a variety of distressful factors. Pets can travel by car over long distances as well. However, should your trip spread over several days, you need to make sure you find a place to stay for both yourself and your pet. Most often though, pet owners prefer air transportation when travelling over longer distances, their pets being shipped in the same aircraft according to the airline's specific procedures and requirements. You can also have someone else move your pet to a different location, preferably a professional pet mover, for they will know how to take care of it during the travel. Should you choose this solution, you just need to provide them with the pet's health records and leave your contact details.

Final steps of the pet moving process

So you have arrived at your new location. Now you need to get your pet familiarized with the new environment and the best way to do that is to not overwhelm it by letting it loose around the place from the very beginning. Also, try to make the new place as welcoming as possible by filling it with toys and other familiar stuff. Try to refrain from making too many changes, whether in the pet's schedule or its surroundings. Otherwise, your pet is bound to feel uncomfortable and a visit to the vet's office may be required.
